Shrink Film VS BOPP Film: What's The Difference?

Sep. 24, 2025

As you explore different types of flexible packaging films, you may be considering shrink film or biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) overwrap film for your products.

However, you might be unsure about the differences between these two types of films. Understanding their distinct characteristics and applications is essential to select the right film that best suits your product packaging needs.

What Is Shrink Film?

Shrink film, also known as shrink wrap, is a type of flexible packaging film widely used for packaging food, board games, and a variety of consumer goods. It is typically made from polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or polyolefin and is a common material on packaging lines around the world.

The typical process for using shrink film begins by placing the product into a shrink film sleeve, which is then sealed on both ends using a specialized machine called a sealer. The sealed product is then transported via a conveyor belt into a heat tunnel.

Inside the heat tunnel, heated air causes the shrink film to contract tightly around the product, conforming to its shape and providing a secure, protective layer. After passing through the heat tunnel, the packaged product continues along the line, ready for storage or shipment.

BOPP Film

What Is Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene Film?

Biaxially oriented polypropylene (also known as BOPP) film is a kind of flexible packaging film. Unlike shrink film, BOPP is not heated and shrunk in a heat tunnel but is used as an overwrap film to package products. An overwrap film is applied by wrapping the film over the product or over another form of packaging containing the product.

BOPP films are generally used for food packaging. However, they are also increasingly replacing cellophane in applications such as snacks and cigarette packaging, mainly due to BOPP's superior performance and lower cost.

Biaxially oriented polypropylene film has improved barrier properties against oxygen and water vapor. Its resistance to impact and flex-cracking is also better compared with polypropylene shrink film.

Difference Between PET and BOPP

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is a versatile and sustainable packaging material suitable for products of various shapes and sizes. PET is durable and environmentally friendly but can be susceptible to scuffing, scratching, or tearing if not handled carefully. It is also less transparent and more stretchable than BOPP.

Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film, on the other hand, is water-resistant and tear-resistant, making it well-suited for products that may experience rough handling, such as those in warehouses or distribution centers.

Shrink Film vs BOPP Film: Which Is Right for You?

Before deciding which type of flexible packaging film is best for your product, consider the following questions. Your answers will help you determine whether shrink film or BOPP film is more suitable for your packaging needs.

  1. Are your products extremely heat-sensitive?

    • If yes, BOPP film is the better choice.

  2. Do you want a film that tightly and uniformly encases your products?

    • If yes, shrink film is more suitable.

  3. Do your products require increased barrier properties against oxygen and water vapor?

    • If yes, BOPP film is the better option.

  4. Do you want to use a light gauge of flexible film?

    • If yes, light gauge shrink film is more appropriate.

  5. Do you need a film with higher resistance to impact and flex-cracking?

    • If yes, BOPP film is the better choice.

  6. Are you looking to avoid using plastic packaging?

    • If yes, neither shrink film nor BOPP film is suitable.

  7. Do you prefer a biodegradable packaging film?

    • If yes, biodegradable shrink film is the option to consider.

By answering these questions, you will have the information needed to select the flexible packaging film that best meets your product requirements.

What Is BOPP Shrink Film?

BOPP shrink film is a plastic film made from biaxially oriented polypropylene. It is commonly used to package products that need protection from the elements, such as food and electronics. BOPP shrink film is water-resistant and tear-resistant, making it ideal for packaging items that may be subject to rough handling.

Common Uses of BOPP Shrink Film

Some of the most frequent applications include:

  • ·  Food product packaging

  • ·  Electronics packaging

  • ·  Cigarette packaging

  • ·  General product protection

  • ·  Applications requiring water and tear resistance

How to Use BOPP Shrink Film

BOPP film is typically used with automatic packaging machines. Shrink films are designed for specific machines, and each has a unique shrink ratio. BOPP films should not be used on machines set for PET shrink ratios.

When using BOPP shrink film, ensure the machine is set to the correct heat setting, as incorrect temperatures can damage the film or cause it to fail. BOPP films generally have a moderate shrink rate, and applying too much pressure can cause creasing or wrinkling. Avoid over-tightening the machine’s clamps when securing the film.
